Dust

You just got done cleaning and dusting your house and not only are you tired, but your allergies are out of control. Sneezing, watery, itchy, eyes, the whole bit. You may be allergic to dust. About 10% of the population is allergic to dust mites, but it is as high as 25% in humid areas. In fact, this allergy is the primary cause of year-round hay fever (allergic rhinitis). Some of the symptoms resulting from this allergy are:

  • Red, Itchy Swollen Eyes
  • Sneezing
  • Trouble Breathing
  • Eczema, Rashes, Itchiness on Arms & Legs

Options for Combating These Microscopic, Eight Legged Creatures

First, tear out all the carpet in your house then tear out all the carpet in all of your relatives and friends houses. Next, you will probably want to spend thousands of dollars on new hard wood floors and wash these floors several times per day to keep them free from dust mites.

Next, encase all pillows in zippered allergen impermeable covers. While you're at it, encase your mattress and box spring in zippered allergen-impermeable covers. Wash all blankets, sheets, pillowcases, and mattress pads in hot water (about one hundred and thirty degrees) every two weeks.

Then, spray your entire house in arachacides, which are chemicals that kill dust mites. Get a dehumidifier because dust mites love humidity. Consider removing fabric window coverings and replacing them with plastic ones. Get rid of tapestries or fabric wall hangings. Are we having fun yet? What's worse is that you have now spent thousands of dollars in order to alleviate allergies. Many medical doctors agree that all of this won't actually help your fight against these 8 legged little pests.

Daniel DeNoon, in an article entitled, You Can Fight Dust Mites, but You Can't Win, writes ’ÄúAn analysis of clinical studies shows that even if you succeed in getting rid of most of the dust mites in your home, it won't prevent allergic asthma triggered by these pests. Food Allergies

That bite of ice cream is dreamy. That warm, freshly baked wheat bread is mouth watering. Those nuts would really hit the spot. For most people these foods are perfectly harmless. Some people however, eat these foods and will pay for it later with a headache, stomachache or itchy skin. If these symptoms sound familiar you're probably one of the 12 million Americans who have food allergies (Anne Munoz-Furlong, When Food Allergies Affect Your Child)

The incidence of food allergies has doubled in the United States in the last 10 years.

The Food Allergens

While food labels don't include every possible allergen, they do list the top eight, which account for 90 percent of all documented food allergies:

  • Milk
  • Eggs
  • Peanuts
  • Tree nuts (such as almonds, cashews, walnuts)
  • Fish (such as bass, cod, flounder)
  • Shellfish (such as crab, lobster, shrimp)
  • Soy
  • Wheat

Food Allergy Symptoms

For some people, an allergic reaction to a particular food may be uncomfortable but not serious. For other people, an allergic food reaction can be frightening and even life-threatening. Signs and symptoms of a food allergy usually develop within a few minutes to an hour and include:

  • Tingling in the mouth
  • Hives, itching or eczema
  • Swelling of the lips, face, tongue, throat, or other parts of the body
  • Wheezing, nasal congestion or trouble breathing
  • Abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea or vomiting
  • Dizziness, lightheadedness or fainting

Pet Allergies

For so many people pets provide companionship, security and a sense of comfort. For other people pets provide watery, swollen and itchy eyes, a runny nose, sneezing, a throat that feels like sandpaper and possibly even an asthma attack that feels like you are breathing through a straw. If you are one of the 10% of Americans that suffer from pet allergies your lifestyle may be greatly affected by these furry little creatures. Maybe you have friends whose houses you can't go to because they have cats or dogs. And maybe your brothers and sisters give you a hard time because your allergies prevented the family from getting any pets.

Cause of an Allergic Reaction

An allergic reaction is somewhat like a case of mistaken identity within your body's immune system. Normally, your immune system generates antibodies to protect your body against bacteria, viruses or toxic substances.

If you have a pet allergy, your body generates an allergy-causing antibody to a protein found either in an animal's skin cells, saliva or urine. In other words, your immune system mistakenly identified this protein as something that could harm you. Once your body has developed an allergy-causing antibody to a particular agent (allergen) ’Äî in this case, an animal protein ’Äî your immune system will be sensitive to it. When you inhale the allergen or come into contact with it, your immune system responds and produces an inflammatory response in your nasal passages or lungs.

Allergy Control

Animals and their dander are almost everywhere. Who doesn't have a cat or a dog nowadays? You could live a life animal free by getting rid of your animals and never going over to anybody's house that has them, or you could get reputable allergy reduction products throughout your home. You could buy a HEPA filter for your forced air heating/AC unit or, install a central air cleaner on your central air unit. Maybe you could use a vacuum that contains a HEPA filter, clean the walls of your home (especially in the rooms that you frequent) and wash your animal frequently with water to reduce the amount of allergen exposure. All of this requires a lot of money and a lot of time. Is there a better way?

Hay Fever

For some people spring time means the wonderful smell of freshly cut grass, the feeling of love in the air and frequent stops to smell the roses. For other people however, spring means weeks of uncontrollable sneezing, a runny nose, asthma, rashes, itchy, red, watery eyes and a desire to lock themselves in the basement until allergy season is over.

Wheat, Gluten, & their Allergy Link

Many would give anything to have a warm piece of buttered wheat bread but doctors have told them they are allergic to wheat or have gluten intolerance. You don't care and you eat it anyways knowing that you will probably suffer the consequences or, you may find that it is impossible to avoid products with wheat because it seems like there is wheat in everything.

Common symptoms of wheat allergy can begin within a few minutes after eating, or they can start a few hours after and include:

  • Abdominal cramps
  • Headaches
  • Vomiting
  • Nausea
  • Diarrhea
  • Hives
  • Eczema
  • Swelling around the mouth
  • Anaphylaxis - a severe reaction involving major body systems
